Shagbark Valley Farm
Meet the farmers
Tucked away in a serene forest between Moberly and Columbia, Shagbark Valley Farm is the homestead of Nathan and Jessica Bratten. The flagship product of the operation is duck eggs, a delicacy the Bratten's are helping to further popularize in the United States. Alongside their duck eggs, they cultivate a vibrant garden featuring tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelon, cantaloupe, beans, herbs, winter squash, Swiss chard, lettuce, and peppers--all grown without pesticides.
Jessica and Nathan moved to Shagbark Valley in the Spring of 2021, embracing a lifestyle that minimizes environmental impact. Their commitment to sustainable farming is evident in every aspect of their operation. From using compost and duck pond water to fertilize their gardens, to reusing straw from the duck coop, every resource is carefully managed and recycled. Nathan's homemade water collection system and their rigorous recycling practices ensure that they maintain a minimal waste footprint, refusing to use trash services and instead composting, reusing, or recycling everything.
The couple's love for the land extends beyond the garden and duck ponds. They work to maintain the native flora of Missouri, removing invasive species and promoting a balanced ecosystem. Their small herd of goats plays a role in this effort, keeping the underbrush in check and providing natural fertilizer for their crops. The Bratten's holistic approach to farming ensures that they not only produce healthy, organic food but also contribute positively to the environment. Jessica reflects, “I guess I’ve realized that plants are my purpose in life,” encapsulating the profound joy they find in nurturing the garden and the forest, as well as their dozens of house plants.
