Greenbelt Land Trust of Mid-Missouri

Earth Day, Stewardship, and Conservation

It’s been a busy couple of weeks at Greenbelt Land Trust of Mid-Missouri!  Obviously, Earth Day is a big holiday for us as a conservation organization, and so we have not one, not two, but THREE things going on to celebrate it!

The first thing we did was host a booth at Columbia’s Earth Day Festival (for the third year in a row!).  It was a blast seeing everybody who came out to enjoy the weather and celebrate Columbia’s commitment to our natural heritage.  Our booth was staffed by board members this year, and they had such a great time talking to passers-by about land conservation and what we do.  We sold a few hats, too!  If you didn’t make it by to see us, though, don’t sweat it; we can still sell you a hat or make you a member!  Just click over to our contribution or contact page and get in touch.

The second big thing this weekend was our annual participation in Mizzou’s Caring for Columbia Day.  We welcomed a big group of Mizzou students to Hinkson Creek Nature Preserve to help us clear invasive honeysuckle.  They worked hard and were rewarded with a short nature walk (hopefully before heading over to the festival downtown!).  We are so grateful for the help of these community-oriented students every year – we couldn’t do what we do without their support.

Finally, on Earth Day, we kicked off our first annual Conservation Defense Fund drive.  Our Conservation Defense Fund is an endowment held by the Community Foundation of Central Missouri that provides us with the resources we need to cover legal expenses in defense of our lands.  I hope I don’t have to tell you how important that is!  We take our obligation to steward our lands very seriously, and we want to be sure that we are prepared to do so forever!  To that end, all donations made to Greenbelt between April 22nd and May 31st will be split – half will go to our Conservation Defense Fund, and half will go to funding our everyday operating expenses.

We want to raise $10,000 between now and then, so we need your help!  Please make a secure online contribution by clicking here, or feel free to mail us a check at PO Box 144, Columbia, MO 65205.

Thank you for all you do to take care of Mid-Missouri’s natural heritage, and a very happy Earth Day!
