Hemme Brothers Farmstead Creamery
Meet the farmers
The Hemmes have deep roots in the Sweet Springs, Missouri area, with over 175 years of farming history. 40 years ago, David and Janet Hemme continued that tradition when they purchased their farm, initially raising hogs before transitioning to dairy in the 1990s. By 2016, as their four sons returned to the farm after obtaining degrees and starting families, the time had come to either expand the dairy or explore new opportunities. This pivotal juncture led to the creation of Hemme Brothers Creamery.
David and his sons each specialize in key areas of farm operations. John manages row crops and replacement heifers, while Nathan serves as the cheese maker. Michael and Erin oversee the young heifers and the milking herd, and David handles packaging and deliveries. Together, their collaborative efforts transform crops and pasture into the cheese that you can find across Missouri.
The crops are grown using principles of regenerative agriculture. The land is not tilled, cover crops are used, livestock graze, and manure is spread. This holistic approach results in excellent soil health, more carbon sequestered from the atmosphere, and more nutrients in their cheese.
Hemme Brothers Creamery offers a diverse range of cheeses, including German quark, various flavors of cheese curds, several types of cheddar, and feta. You can find them at the Columbia Farmers’ Market and many area grocers.
