GLT working lands initiative
Our mission is to conserve the streams, forests, grasslands, and farmlands that represent our distinctive landscape for present and future generations. This initiative focuses on the farmland component of our mission. In our definition, farmland includes lands that are actively managed to provide for land-based livelihoods - food, flower and fiber farms, family forests, ranches, vineyards, and more. These are Missouri’s working lands. With thoughtful and sustainable management, these lands can support conservation values while contributing to a thriving rural economy and robust local food system.
farmland conservation
We recognize that farms are an integral part of our region’s character, culture and ecology, and we believe that farmers have an essential conservation role as stewards of Missouri’s land and water. Missouri is losing farms, and much of our farmland will change hands in upcoming years as aging farmers retire. As a land trust based in the heart of Mid-Missouri, Greenbelt is uniquely positioned to ensure that our state’s farmland is permanently protected and made available to the next generation of farmers.
land linking
We are working on a website to connect available land with those seeking to build land-based livelihoods.
Expected launch is winter 2023/2024.

Profiles of sustainable producers across Missouri
Through a USDA Local Food Promotion Program grant, we've partnered with Root Cellar and The Loop Community Improvement District to showcase the stories of Missouri producers who are committed to conservation and strengthening the local food system in Mid-Missouri. These profiles highlight the dedication of farmers and producers who prioritize sustainability while providing fresh, local products to our community.
