Happy CoMoGives Season!

Here we are again in December, which is CoMoGives season!  That means that, if you’re planning to make a gift to Greenbelt during the month of December, you have to do it by heading to the CoMoGives website!  Don’t worry, though – it’ll get to us.

CoMoGives is a collaborative fundraising effort among Mid-Missouri nonprofits.  We participated for the first time last year, and it was great!  It’s a wonderful way to celebrate the holidays – you can break up the business of travel and holiday shopping by “shopping” for your favorite charities to support!  Obviously, I hope Greenbelt is among those, but there are so many other great organizations – we’re one of 114 participants this year!

One of the other great aspects of it is that it puts us in the running for challenge grants -we could get as much as an extra $2,000 from the Community Foundation of Central Missouri for a whole bunch of different things, like having the highest donation total or the most individual donors.  Check out the list of challenge grants here!

But CoMoGives isn’t all we’ve been up to.  We’re continuing to do a bunch of great conservation work around Columbia and Mid-Missouri.

On November 11th, we had a volunteer work day at the Purdy Conservation Easement property, and what a day it was!  20 of our friends showed up, and we put the hurt on some invasive bush honeysuckle.  We even planted some native stuff in its place!

The honeysuckle clearing crew!

We also received some grant money from the Missouri Bird Conservation Initiative to hire a forester to clear honeysuckle at Hinkson Valley Nature Preserve and improve the habitat at Big Sky Nature Preserve, and that work was done over the last few weeks!  There are going to be some happy birds on Greenbelt properties in the very near future.

But we have been staying busy with the CoMoGives stuff.  You should have gotten a letter from me in the mail recently, and we’ve also had a couple great events to kick the month off, including participating in Living Windows with our friends at Alpine Shop, and a Shop and Give event at Poppy!  There’s been so much fun stuff going on that I can’t hardly stand it.

The most exciting thing, though, is the incredible volume of donations we’ve already received.  In the first 3 days of CoMoGives, we have already raised $5,270!  Last year, for the whole month, we raised $9,000 total!  The pace we’re on is unbelievable, and I am so grateful to live in a community that is so invested in conservation.

We’ll have other fun stuff going on this month, too, so be sure to stay plugged in by liking us on Facebook, and following us on Instagram and Twitter.  It’s the best way to get up-to-the-minute information!

Finally, I want to wish you all a very happy holiday season.  May it be full of whatever makes you happy.

Cheers!

Mike Powell, Executive Director

P.S. – If you make a gift of $50 or more through CoMoGives, you’ll be a member and get great benefits like access to the presale of next year’s Deep Roots Dinner on October 21st, 2018.  Pencil it in on your calendars!
